Architectural Institute of BC

The Architectural Institute of British Columbia is a self-governing body dedicated to excellence in the profession of architecture for the benefit of its membership, the environment and society.

 

BC Carpenter's Union

We are a diverse union of over 7000 members including carpenters, carpenter apprentices, lathers, millwrights, floorlayers, piledrivers, industrial workers and many other construction trades and school board employees. We are the largest union representing construction workers in British Columbia, Canada’s most westerly province.

 

BC College of Teachers

The BC College of Teachers is a statutory body. Its mandate is to regulate the education profession in the public interest. It is empowered through legislation to ensure that educators who work with students in BC classrooms are competent and suitable for the important role they play in society.

 

BC Coroner's Service

The Coroners Service of British Columbia is responsible for the investigation of all unnatural, sudden and unexpected, unexplained or unattended deaths. It makes recommendations to improve public safety and prevent death in similar circumstances.

 

BC Farm Industry Review Board The British Columbia Farm Industry Review Board ("FIRB") is an administrative tribunal – a statutory appeal body with additional responsibilities for the general supervision of marketing boards and commissions ("commodity boards") – operating in the agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

 

BC Human Rights Tribunal

The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal is an independent, quasi-judicial body created by the B.C. Human Rights Code. The Tribunal is responsible for accepting, screening, mediating and adjudicating human rights complaints. The Tribunal offers the parties to a complaint the opportunity to try to resolve the complaint through mediation. If the parties don't resolve the complaint, the Tribunal holds a hearing.

 

BC Mental Health Review Panels

Review panels are mandated to adjudicate whether or not a patient should continue to be detained in a mental health facility after hearing evidence from the facility and from the patient.

 

BC Pension Corporation

The Pension Corporation is one of Canada's largest pension benefit administrators, serving the boards of trustees for the largest public sector pension plans in British Columbia, and representing over 300,000 active and retired plan members, and about 800 plan employers.

 

BC Review Board

The British Columbia Review Board is an independent tribunal established under the Criminal Code of Canada. The Review Board’s mandate is to protect public safety while also safeguarding the rights and freedoms of mentally disordered persons who are alleged to have committed an offence.

 

BC Securities Commission

The BCSC is an independent agency of the British Columbia government and is responsible for the administration of the Securities Act.

 

BC Vegetable Marketing Commission

The BC Vegetable Marketing Commission provides for orderly marketing in the vegetable industry. It is directed by an appointed Chair and vegetable producers elected democratically by their fellow producers.

 

College of Dental Surgeons of BC

The College of Dental Surgeons of BC assures British Columbians of professional standards of oral health care, ethics and competence by regulating dentistry in a fair and reasonable manner.

College of Physical Therapists of BC

The College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia (CPTBC) is a not-for-profit organization responsible for regulating the practice of physical therapists in the public interest.

 

Community Care and Assisted Living Appeal Board

The function of the appeal board is to hear appeals regarding the licensing of community care facilities, the registration of assisted living residences and the licensing of early childhood educators.

 

Employment and Assistance Appeal Tribunal

The Tribunal is an independent quasi-judicial body that manages a final appeal process for clients of the Ministry of Human Resources who wish to appeal a “reconsideration decision“ under the Employment and Assistance Act, the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act or the Child Care Subsidy Act.

 

Employment Standards Branch

The Employment Standards Branch administers the Employment Standards Act and Regulation, which set minimum standards of wages and working conditions in most workplaces.

 

Employment Standards Tribunal

The Employment Standards Tribunal is an independent agency of the Government of British Columbia with a mandate to conduct appeals of Determinations issued by the Director of Employment Standards.

 

Environmental Appeal Board The Environmental Appeal Board is governed by Part 8 of the Environmental Management Act. It is an independent agency which hears appeals from administrative decisions related to environmental issues. The Environmental Appeal Board plays a role in ensuring the protection of the environment by providing a final quasi-judicial access point for public and industry to appeal environmental administrative decisions. The Board ensures that administrative decisions relating to the environment are fair and objective.

Financial Services Tribunal

The FST hears appeals from individuals and institutions who want to contest enforcement decisions made by the Insurance Council of British Columbia, Real Estate Council of British Columbia, Superintendent of Real Estate, Superintendent of Pensions, Registrar of Mortgage Brokers and Superintendent of Financial Institutions. It provides an avenue of appeal for those who believe that they have been wrongly limited or denied the ability to work in one of the regulated occupations to which an appeal lies to the FST.

 

Forest Appeals Commission

The Forest Appeals Commission is an independent tribunal established under the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and continued under the Forest and Range Practices Act. The Commission hears appeals from decision made under the Code.

 

Forest Practices Board

British Columbia's Forest Practices Board is an independent public watchdog that reports to the public about compliance with the Forest Practices Code and the achievement of its intent.

 

Hospital Appeal Board

The Hospital Appeal Board's function is to hear appeals filed by medical or dental practitioners regarding: a decision of a hospital's board of management that modifies, refuses, suspends, revokes or fails to renew a permit to practise medicine or dentistry in a hospital; or the failure or refusal of a hospital's board of management to consider and decide on an application for a permit.

 

Information and Privacy Commission

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) is independent from government and monitors and enforces British Columbia's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

 

Investment Dealers Association

The Investment Dealers Association of Canada is the national self-regulatory organization and representative of the securities industry. Our Members include more than 190 investment dealers who play an essential role in the Canadian economy by raising capital for governments and businesses and by helping individuals and institutions invest with confidence in open and fair capital markets.

 

Labour Relations Board of BC

The Labour Relations Code (the "Code") establishes the Labour Relations Board. The statute grants the Board exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine applications and complaints under the Code and to make orders under the Code that it deems appropriate.

 

Law Society of BC

As the independent governing body for all BC lawyers, the Law Society protects the public interest in the administration of justice and sets and upholds standards for the legal profession.

 

Liquor Control and Licensing Branch

The Liquor Control and Licensing Branch issues licences for making and selling liquor (either by the glass or bottle) and supervises the service of liquor in licensed establishments.

Office of the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of BC

The Provincial Court is the first level of court in British Columbia. The Court's jurisdiction includes criminal, family, child protection, small claims, and traffic cases.

Passenger Transportation Board

The Passenger Transportation Board (the “Board”) approves applications to operate inter-city buses and passenger directed vehicles in British Columbia, and decides appeals on administrative sanctions initiated by the Registrar of Passenger Transportation.

 

Private Career Training Institutions Agency

The Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA) has responsibility under the Private Career Training Institutions Act to: Provide consumer protection to the students and prospective students of registered institutions; Establish standards of quality that must be met by accredited institutions; Establish and manage the Student Training Completion Fund.

 

Property Assessment Appeal Board

The Board resolves appeals on property assessments across British Columbia.

 

Property Assessment Reveiw Panel

Property Assessment Review Panels are established every year by the Minister to review property assessments under the Assessment Act. The panels provide British Columbia property owners with a first level of complaint in an accessible, affordable and equitable forum.

 

Public Service Commission of Canada

The mandate of the Public Service Commission, as an independent agency reporting to Parliament, is: to recruit and appoint qualified persons to the Public Service; to conduct investigations and audits; to protect political impartiality of the Public Service.

 

Public Service Labour Relations Board

The PSLRA established a new Public Service Labour Relations Board building on the former Public Service Staff Relations Board, an institution that was established in 1967 with the inception of collective bargaining in the Public Service of Canada. Under the new Act, the Board is vested with an expanded mandate consisting of three major components: adjudication , mediation, and compensation research and analysis .

 

Real Estate Council of BC

The Real Estate Council is a regulatory agency established by the provincial government. Its mandate is to protect the public by enforcing the licensing and licensee conduct requirements of the Real Estate Services Act.

Worker's Compensation Appeal Tribunal

WCAT was created by Bill 63, the Workers Compensation Amendment Act (No. 2), 2002. Effective March 3, 2003, this independent tribunal replaced the Workers' Compensation Review Board and the Appeal Division of the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB).

 

Worker's Compensation Board - Review Division

The Review Division was created in 2002 as a result of amendments to the Workers Compensation Act (the "Act") that made significant changes to the workers' compensation appeal process.

The Workers' Compensation Board of B.C. (WCB) is dedicated to promoting workplace health and safety for the workers and employers of this province. We consult with and educate employers and workers and monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

Yukon Surface Rights Board

The Yukon Surface Rights Board (the ‘Board’) is a tribunal which, primarily, resolves access disputes between those owning or having an interest in land (surface rights holders) and those with access rights to the land. The Board gets involved in disputes when the parties are unable to reach an agreement, and a party applies to the Board. The Board offers mediation to the Parties to the dispute of an accepted application and, failing mediation, conducts hearings on matters within its jurisdiction.
